As the rebel-suppression army stormed the city, chaos descended upon it. Citizens hid in their homes, doors bolted tight. Rebel soldiers either surrendered on the spot or fled in every direction. Others took advantage of the turmoil to loot, burn, and commit atrocities.
With word spreading that the Crown Prince had fled and the Imperial City guards had abandoned their posts, many commoners flocked to the Imperial City to seize the chance to profit from the national tragedy. The boldest among them ran inside, hunting for valuables. Seeing them lead the way, others followed to plunder.
Some guards and eunuchs remained in the Imperial City. Initially, they used weapons and clubs to drive the crowds back, but they were vastly outnumbered. Realizing they could not stop the tide, they simply gave up and joined the looting.
