The messenger was slightly taken aback, but immediately relayed the order at full speed: "Sound the gongs and pull back! Sound the gongs and pull back!"
"What?" Hooge, thinking he had misheard, looked at Dodo in astonishment. "Uncle, why are we retreating? Even if the siege has met with resistance, we shouldn't pull back so hastily; it will affect morale. Besides, our forces have shot and killed many of the enemy beneath the walls, and there is no sign of us faltering."
