Zeng Ying was adept at naval warfare. In every battle, he would charge to the front, sweeping aside all obstacles; with his beautiful beard, his enemies would gaze upon him in awe, believing him to be a deity. He was a man of dashing character and martial talent who loved to aid others in their time of need, leading his contemporaries to affectionately dub him "Master Zeng."
In history, after Zhang Xianzhong defeated Zeng Ying, he went on to capture Chongqing and then pushed straight toward Chengdu. The people of Shu suffered bitterly under Zhang Xianzhong and would always yearn for Zeng Ying, saying, "If Master Zeng were still here, we would not have fallen to this state."
Qin Liangyu stared at Zeng Ying and asked, "Zeng Ying, your previous defeat at the hands of Zhang Xianzhong resulted in heavy losses of men and equipment. I gave you two hundred thousand taels of silver to recruit soldiers; how many have you raised as of now?"
