Yongzhou Prefecture is the southernmost prefecture of Huguang Province, bordering Guangxi and Guangdong, and lying in close proximity to Guizhou.
Wang Chengen was not particularly sensitive to most regions, but he was hyper-sensitive to Guizhou. This was because two rebellions had broken out there in succession: the Bozhou Rebellion in the twenty-fourth year of Wanli, and the She-An Rebellion in the second year of Tianqi.
The She-An Rebellion, in particular, was devastating. It began in the first year of Tianqi and did not end until the second year of Chongzhen. It lasted nine years, engulfed four provinces—Sichuan, Guizhou, Yunnan, and Guangxi—and resulted in millions of casualties. The amount of money and grain it consumed was beyond counting.
