Fang Yizhi, courtesy name Mizhi, was a native of Tongcheng, Anqing Prefecture, in Southern Zhili.
Historically, after the fall of the Ming Dynasty, Fang Yizhi first fled to Nanjing before seeking refuge with the Gui Prince, Zhu Youlang. After being falsely impeached by the eunuch Wang Kun and stripped of his rank, he became disheartened, shaved his head to become a monk, and secretly organized movements to resist the Qing and restore the Ming. In the tenth year of the Kangxi Emperor's reign, Fang Yizhi was implicated in the "Guangdong Case" and arrested. While being transported to Guangdong, he allegedly died on a boat after a carbuncle erupted. The true nature of the Guangdong Case remains difficult to verify due to the passage of time and incomplete records; existing accounts suggest it may have been a charge of treason involving mass executions, an act of literary inquisition, or a personal vendetta by an enemy.
