Under the arrangements made by Qin Liangyu, Red Lady and Li Shunzu set out with a light force of one thousand cavalry.
They first pressed on straight to Tongzhou (modern-day Hancheng), some three hundred li away, then followed the Yellow River northward, turning west upon reaching the confluence of the Yellow and Yan rivers. After passing through Yanchang County, they traveled another eighty li and set an ambush thirty li east of the Yan’an prefecture city.
