Tiemenguan bordered the Bohai Sea and was renowned for its salt production. As it sat at the mouth of the Grand Qing River, its deep waters made it an ideal harbor for docking ships, resulting in a constant stream of merchant vessels.
Recognizing its strategic importance, the Jin Dynasty had established a military post here. Though called a pass, it was more akin to a fortified city.
