A deafening explosion rang out, beginning with a billow of thick smoke, followed immediately by a violent shockwave and lethal fragments that blasted in all directions.
The soldiers and warhorses closest to the blast site bore the brunt of the impact. The lucky ones were struck only by the sonic wave; clutching their heads and ears, they tumbled uncontrollably from their saddles. Terrified by the tremendous roar, the horses neighed wildly and bolted into the distance.
Those less fortunate were struck directly by flying shrapnel and lead shot. Some shrieked endlessly as blood streamed from their wounds, while others were torn to shreds, losing their lives on the spot.
