Guihua City was founded in the sixth year of the Longqing reign of the Great Ming Dynasty. Altan Khan, then leader of the Tumet Mongols, and his wife, San Niangzi, gathered skilled craftsmen from various tribes to build a city out of blue bricks on the plains south of the Daqing Mountains and northeast of the Yellow River, modeling it after Dadu of the Yuan Dynasty.
From a distance, the blue-brick city appeared as a vast expanse of blue. The Mongols named it "Kuku Khoto," meaning "Blue City."
