While Li Xingzhong was searching for traces of Li Dingguo, Li Dingguo’s main force was marching south along the Great Wall. They were not heading toward Dalinghe Fortress to provide reinforcements, but toward Wujiafen Village. Upon arriving at Wujiafen, the army did not linger and soon reached the walls of Xining Fortress.
Inside Xining Fortress were three hundred Jiannu soldiers. Mandahai had stationed them there for two reasons: first, to serve as a courier station for resting messengers; second, as an outpost to provide early warnings to the rear.
