The Li Family
Qin Huairu was preparing a meal, her expression grim. Ever since her son had nearly been injured by local hoodlums a few days ago, Li Jian’s attitude toward her had grown increasingly hostile. This morning, she had been jolted awake by two heavy slaps across the face before she had even opened her eyes.
If she were still living with the Jia Family, and they dared to treat her this way, she would have argued with Widow Zhang and then run out into the Courtyard Compound to play the victim. The residents would surely have taken her side, allowing her to occupy the moral high ground and condemn Widow Zhang’s unreasonable behavior. But now, she was unemployed and entirely dependent on Li Jian for her livelihood; she had no leverage at all. She understood why Li Jian was acting this way, but did she, as a mother, want to see her son hurt? The boy wouldn’t listen to her and was always stirring up trouble; what was she supposed to do? Her husband didn’t bother to raise him properly, yet he dumped all the responsibility on her.
