Although it was the Lunar New Year, not everyone was happy. For some, the holiday felt more like serving a prison sentence.
Yuli had bought quite a few things to bring home for the holiday. Even though she usually lived out on her own, returning home for the New Year was a necessity. She no longer lived in the cramped room she once occupied; she had rented a much larger place. In fact, given her current financial situation, she could even afford to buy a house. After half a lifetime of living frugally with the Yan family, she was determined to treat herself well for the rest of her days.
Truth be told, Yuli’s family didn’t hold her in high regard anymore. Her divorce had brought them a fair amount of scorn, and her mother had told her not to come back unless necessary. With her younger siblings now married, Yuli felt like a stranger in her own home—perhaps she had been one ever since she married out. Aside from the few days immediately following her divorce, when her family had shown her a modicum of warmth, their attitude had quickly soured into blame and impatience.
