Liu Haizhong crunched over the scattered ice toward the black market, the soles of his shoes emitting a faint, rhythmic squeaking sound. Xu Shu followed three streets behind, his cotton face mask damp with condensation, frozen stiff against the bridge of his nose. To devise the perfect plan to eliminate Liu Haizhong, Xu Shu had put in a great deal of effort. He had enlisted Xu Haitian, Xu Haitao, and Xu Fei to help him keep a secret watch on Liu Haizhong. They had logged every move Liu made outside of his shifts at the Rolling Mill. Based on these records, Xu Shu discovered that Liu visited the black market once every ten days to buy eggs, though the exact time was never fixed. Xu Shu was determined to use this opportunity to get rid of him. However, he did not intend to ask others for help. As for Xu Haitao and the others, he only let them assist with the surveillance; he would not let them participate in the actual act. After all, this was his own business, and they all had families and children now. Moreover, every additional person involved increased the risk of exposure.
