At the same time, twilight descended upon the courtyard. First Aunt hurried toward the Deaf Old Lady’s home, carrying her evening meal.
The dim light spilling from the room added a layer of gloom to the aging courtyard. First Aunt pushed the door open gently, stepped inside, and placed the bowls and dishes steadily onto the table. It was a bowl of dull-colored cornmeal porridge, a dry steamed bun, and a plain-looking plate of stir-fried cabbage.
"Old Lady, it’s time for dinner." First Aunt spoke softly, her voice tinged with both deference and weariness.
