In Da Qian, vermicelli made from sweet potato starch is a common commodity. The dish Lin Shanyue had previously prepared for Elder Pei was something she had made herself, but the process was far too tedious, and she simply lacked the time now. Consequently, she sent Xialu out to purchase some ready-made vermicelli. The store-bought variety wasn't quite as white, but that hardly mattered. After soaking it in hot water, Lin Shanyue turned her attention to preparing the other ingredients. Dried goods were easy to come by in winter. The East Market had everything—dried bamboo shoots, wood ear mushrooms, and yuba—all of which she soaked in hot water. She also prepared some fresh seasonal produce: potatoes, celery, seaweed, and bean sprouts.
