Chapter 109

Upon returning home, Fu Ying immediately started washing the rice. The Fu Family was used to electric rice cookers, and Mom Fu had brought one back with her, making it convenient to cook. Otherwise, following the traditional method, the rice would have to be steamed. First, the rice was washed clean, then a large pot filled with water up to seventy percent capacity was placed on the stove. The steamer basket was set on top, and the rice poured into it. Over high heat, it took about fifteen minutes to steam. Just before it was fully cooked, the lid had to be lifted to sprinkle water evenly over the rice so it would cook through completely, followed by another five minutes of steaming before it was finally done. Mom Fu might or might not return to this traditional method in the future, but Fu Ying certainly wouldn't. That way was hard to time—you'd end up with half-raw rice—and it was a waste of time. An electric rice cooker could do the job all at once and so quickly.
