By the time it was practically dark, Second Aunt Fu came over to call everyone for dinner. Fu Ying and the others headed over, and Fu Ying simply helped hand out the bowls before sitting down to wait for the meal to start.
There weren't many dishes for dinner, but they were divided into two plates and arranged in a circle around the stove. There was stir-fried pork with carrots, stir-fried eggplant slices, konjac tofu stir-fried with pickled greens, and a large pot of soup in the middle. It looked very appetizing and went wonderfully with rice.
The carrots were small, locally grown varieties that didn't grow very large; the biggest ones weren't even as thick as a cucumber. These carrots were very crisp and sweet. Fu Ying had tried pulling them straight out of the ground, washing them, and eating them in just a few bites. When the ingredients are good, stir-frying them with pork makes them taste even better.
