The stove inside the house was still burning, meaning Second Aunt Fu must have been coming over regularly to add coal. The house wasn't terribly dirty, but Fu Ying still swept up and gave it a thorough wipe down before telling Fu Zhe to mop the floors. Then, taking advantage of the lingering sunlight, she quickly threw the quilts into the washing machine and gave herself a head-to-toe scrub—her hair had already gone three days without washing, turning greasy and slick. Once Fu Ying finished, she told Fu Zhe to haul some water and wash up too. Fu Zhe wanted to wait until evening, but Fu Ying wouldn't allow it, shoving him straight into his room to take a bath. With the temperature swinging so wildly between day and night, and with Fu Zhe stubbornly refusing to use hot water, it would be far too easy for him to catch a cold.
