Yuta Okkotsu is a descendant of Sugawara no Michizane, one of Japan's three major vengeful spirits, and also a distant relative of Gojo Satoru.
On his birthday in childhood, Yuta made a marriage pact with his childhood friend Rika Orimoto. Tragically, Rika later died in a sudden car accident. Unable to accept her death, Yuta unconsciously used his Cursed Energy to bind her soul, causing Rika's spirit to remain and possess him as a Special Grade Cursed Spirit. Over the course of six years, Rika caused numerous incidents, but because none of them were on a massive scale, she went unnoticed by the sorcerer world. It was only after four students who bullied Yuta were severely injured by Rika and crammed into lockers that the sorcerer world took notice. Yuta was sentenced to secret execution, a verdict he agreed with, but Gojo Satoru intervened and persuaded him to enroll at Jujutsu High instead.
In the original story, his fate was immensely tragic, yet he was also the sole Special Grade Sorcerer remaining at the very end.
