"It's simple. Do you want me to go with you? I'm afraid you'll get taken advantage of. He hasn't been in touch for all these years—why does he suddenly remember he has a daughter now? There's definitely something fishy going on!"
Du Yanran analyzed the situation with great logic.
And as it turned out, Du Yanran was right. It really was like a weasel paying respects to a chicken—with no good intentions!
"Yanran, don't worry. He's still my father, after all. I still want to see him, if only to give myself some closure."
"Well, alright. Be careful, and remember to call me if anything happens!"
Du Yanran's muffled voice came through the phone.
"Don't worry, when have I ever kept anything from you? I'll contact you once I figure out the situation. Happy birthday in advance!"
"Okay, let's stay in touch. Make sure you call me if anything comes up."
Du Yanran gave one last reminder before hanging up the phone.
As soon as she ended the call, Jian Dan immediately dialed the law firm:
"Hello, is this Lawyer Xu? I'm Jian Dan. You called me this morning, and I'd like to schedule an appointment for this afternoon to handle my mother's estate."
"Alright, alright, I understand. I'll bring all the necessary documents along. See you this afternoon, goodbye!"
Jian Dan let out a breath, tidied herself up a bit, stuffed the required documents into her backpack, and went out to hail a cab for the law firm.
Walking into the spacious and bright law firm, the receptionist asked softly:
"Hello, how can I help you today? Do you have an appointment? Would you like me to recommend a lawyer for you?"
"Hello, I have an appointment with Lawyer Xu Zhen."
"Alright, right this way, please."
"Thank you."
Jian Dan arrived at Lawyer Xu's office. Lawyer Xu had already organized all the documents that needed to be signed and had carefully verified Jian Dan's ID card, household registration booklet, and other original materials she brought, making photocopies for the records. Efficiently completing all the procedures, the lawyer handed Jian Dan an envelope and a bank deposit pickup slip.
Jian Dan opened the envelope and saw a key inside. Just like in her past life, the items were stored in a bank, and she had to take her ID card, the law firm's estate inheritance certificate, and the pickup slip to the bank to claim them.
Confirming everything was in order, she quickly signed to confirm, packed all the materials into her bag, and headed straight for the bank.
Upon arriving at the bank, Jian Dan went straight to the duty manager, provided the corresponding materials, took a number, and was led to the bank's storage room.
Accompanied by a security guard, the manager opened the door to the storage room and walked over to the valuables deposit section, which was lined with rows of small storage compartments. The manager led her to locker number 77.
Together, she and the manager inserted their keys into the corresponding keyholes and turned them at the same time. The locker opened smoothly. Carefully taking out the storage box, the manager brought Jian Dan to the reception room, and after asking her to sit down, opened the box lid right in front of her.
Jian Dan stepped forward to look, and it was identical to her past life.
At the very top of the box was a red velvet jewelry box. Opening it revealed a set of white magnolia jade pendant and earrings.
Taking that out, the second layer contained a carved wooden box. Opening it, she found a jade plaque without any patterns or inscriptions. It was three centimeters wide and nine centimeters long—an ordinary greenish-white jade plaque.
The third layer held small gold bars, each about the length of a pinky finger. There were two layers of them, totaling ten bars in all. After inspecting everything, Jian Dan nodded gently.
"Ms. Jian, please verify the stored items. If there are no issues, please sign here on the pickup slip, and you can take the things with you."
"Okay, there are no problems! Hand me the slip, and I'll verify it and sign."
Jian Dan took the verification form, scanned it quickly, and seeing no errors, signed her full name in the recipient column before handing the slip back to the manager.
"Very well. Ms. Jian Dan, we also have a letter left behind by the late Ms. Jian. Please sign for this as well."
Hearing this, Jian Dan raised her slender eyebrows, muttering to herself: Why is there a letter? There was no such thing in her past life.
Taking the envelope from the manager, she saw "To my daughter Jian Dan, to be opened personally" written on it. It was her mother's handwriting—neat, graceful, and gentle, perfectly reflecting her mother's personality.
With slightly trembling hands, Jian Dan opened the envelope to find a piece of stationery and a key. The key was also a deposit box key for this bank, just like the previous one, only with a different number. Feeling somewhat puzzled, Jian Dan anxiously unfolded the letter paper and began to read every single word attentively.
