The Shang Dynasty divided deities into two major categories: one consisted of natural deities such as Heaven, Earth, and Nuwa, while the other comprised ancestral deities.
Every family had its own ancestral deity. As the ancestral deity of the royal lineage—namely, the deceased Kings of Shang—they served as the ancestral deities of the entire Shang state, and thus bore a much nobler title: the Sovereign. Titles such as Di Wuding and Di Shangtang were bestowed only posthumously.
