The emperor traveled in a dragon chariot, and the empress in a phoenix carriage. Aside from them, only those of noble consort rank and above were permitted an eight-bearer palanquin. Ordinary imperial concubines and noble consorts were restricted to small chairs carried by four people, each with their own strict regulations.
