Night fell, and a large group of soldiers readied themselves to move out. Calling them soldiers was a stretch; with their slouching postures and lazy demeanor, they bore no resemblance to military men whatsoever. They wore their caps at crooked angles and their uniforms hung loosely, while the rifles in their hands looked less like weapons and more like pokers for a stove. Before setting off, the soldiers showed no sense of crisis, smoking and chatting idly among themselves about women and playing cards.
