Take Nezha at the beginning: he acts rebelliously because he views himself as an outcast. Later, he is deceived by Li Jing and feels overjoyed to be a 'Spirit Pearl' and a great hero, only to become enraged when he discovers he is actually a 'Demon Pill.' In truth, he has always been defined by others. He cares deeply about their opinions. From his loss of reason and violent outburst upon learning he is a Demon Pill, to his deep emotional reaction when he learns of Li Jing’s plan to sacrifice his own life to save him, and finally his epiphany as he opposes Ao Bing—this process is intended to show Nezha's transformation and growth. But in reality, it fails. Nezha opposes Ao Bing merely because he is moved by familial love to save his parents and master; it is not because he wants to defy his own destiny as a Demon Pill!
Furthermore, every change in Nezha comes from the outside in; not once does he truly change from within. To me, this is not someone who thinks independently about his own fate; he is simply reacting to events as they occur. This hardly embodies the theme: 'My fate is determined by me, not by Heaven!'
