Out of sight, out of mind. Li Xiulan hurried into Yufang's kitchen. Yufang was cooking; the family rarely used cooking oil in their daily meals, but with the grand-aunt and the others visiting, she scraped together half a spoonful of oil with the spatula and added it to the soup.
Watching her cook, Li Xiulan noticed that while the dishes lacked much oil or meat, everything was washed thoroughly. When Li Xiulan said she needed to wash her hands, Yufang pointed to a wooden basin outside, explaining that it was dedicated solely for handwashing.
