After leaving his home, Li Anquan headed straight to the Supply and Marketing Cooperative.
Fortunately, this was Sìjiǔ City; in other places, one would have to arrive at the crack of dawn just to have a chance at buying pork. By the time Li Anquan arrived, however, the good cuts were long gone, leaving only some pork spine and ribs. These cuts, lacking much fat, weren't popular in this era, but Li Anquan happened to be quite fond of them. Moreover, they were incredibly cheap—only ten cents a catty, and no meat ration coupons were required. The only downside was that there was very little meat on the bones.
Without a second thought, Li Anquan took ten catties of ribs, picked up a chicken, some greens, and a bag of peanuts. Just as he was about to leave, he remembered from the television show that Yu Haitang was quite a heavy drinker. Since she was a guest, he reconsidered and bought a bottle of Red Star Erguotou as well. He packed everything into two cloth bags and returned to the Courtyard.
