As soon as Su Mingyu entered Suzhou, she heard a rumor.
It was said that a wealthy young master had recently arrived at the Suzhou Prefectural Office—a high-ranking official sent from the Capital. This young man spent his days indulging in pleasure, frequenting brothels, casinos, and taverns. The Prefect, however, turned a blind eye to all of it; in fact, on several occasions when the young master ran short of silver, attendants from the Prefectural Office were seen bringing funds directly to him.
Within a few days, every merchant in Suzhou had grown fond of this gentleman. Regardless of his true status, anyone held in such high regard by the Prefect—and possessing such extravagant spending habits—was worth treating like a god of wealth.
