Yan Xiao'er leaned over to look down. The voice crying for help belonged to none other than Cao Mianmian, who had only just acquired her spiritual power. She was hanging from the golden nanmu shelves in a posture of extreme awkwardness. Or rather, "hanging" was perhaps inaccurate; it was more that the extended arm of her Guardian Spirit had become stuck. Yan Xiao'er had seen Yu Changqing’s white leopard and Ding Shiqi’s Black Dragon, but she never imagined Cao Mianmian’s Guardian Spirit would be a small monkey. Monkeys were naturally adept at climbing, but because the spiritual power had only just coalesced, it still needed to act in tandem with the host's body and could not manifest independently. This limited how high it could climb. To make matters worse, while the left and right entrances appeared to be two parallel, identical passages, the right side was actually a steep downward slope, with only the top remaining level. Yan Xiao'er was already deep inside the structure, meaning the floor of the passage on the right—where Cao Mianmian was—was much further from the ceiling.
