Chapter 16

The morning light of Magnolia, filtering through the dusty glass of the narrow window, cut diagonal, warm patches of light onto the room's floor. Roy sat on the edge of the bed, the Ring of Serenity on his left index finger emitted a constant, cool silver glow, like an invisible dam, barely restraining his cracked sea of consciousness, which threatened to collapse entirely at the slightest tremor. He tried, as he had on countless mornings, to perform the most basic magic power sensing.
Closing his eyes, he looked inward. What responded was not the familiar trickle of magic power, even if faint but definitely present, but a dead, silent void filled with the labels of "broken points," "exhaustion," and "blockage." As his consciousness sank slightly, the "cracks," symbols of his trauma, felt like wounds being poked, sending sharp yet dull stabs of pain that forced him to pull back immediately.
No. He couldn't even manage the most basic meditation. He opened his eyes and looked at his own open, slightly pale palm.
The black Fairy Tail emblem on his palm was still clear, but the subtle connection that had once resided within it, resonating faintly with his Concept Reconstruction ability, was now gone. The emblem was now just a mark, a symbol of belonging, nothing more. A heavy sense of loss, like a cold leaden block, sank into the depths of his heart.
But he did not let himself sink into it. He stood up, his movements somewhat slow due to his body's weakness and the ubiquitous dull ache. After a simple wash and change into clean clothes, he pushed open the door and walked out.
He needed to do something, he couldn't just stay in his room and be consumed by despair. Even if he had lost his Power, he could at least still "see" and "hear." The streets were already bustling, full of Vitality.
The sun was bright, the hawkers' cries, the rumble of wheels on flagstones, the fragmented conversations of pedestrians... all constituted a vibrant tapestry of town life. However, in Roy's passively activated, unclosable Concept Vision, this tapestry was broken down into countless flowing, faintly shimmering "labels."
He "saw" the freshly baked bread in the bakery emitting the concepts of "warmth," "softness," and "wheat fragrance"; he saw the sparks from the blacksmith's hammer scattering "scorching heat," "hardness," and "tempering"; he saw the balloons chased by children by the roadside, drifting with the attributes of "lightness," "fragility," and "vibrancy"... These conceptual labels were no longer objects he could interfere with and reconstruct; they were simply existing information, filling the surroundings like air. He was like someone whose sense of touch had been taken away, able only to watch the colors flow by, unable to feel their temperature or texture.
He walked aimlessly through the streets, his subconscious leading his footsteps towards the Fairy Tail Guild. Even before he got close, the familiar, mixed, and vast fluctuation of magic power rushed towards him like a tide. Even from a distance, even with the filtering of the Ring of Serenity, the surging stream of information still made him feel slightly dizzy.
He stopped, not entering immediately, but standing at the street corner, "observing" from afar. In his "vision," the Guild's oddly shaped structure itself was entwined with rich concepts like "Solid," "Vitality," "weather-beaten," and "homey atmosphere." Even more striking were the light clusters representing the Guild members, entering and exiting— Natsu was like an inextinguishable, fiercely burning flame, with "destruction" and "passion" at its core, along with "Dragon Power," but also with a faint "disorder" concept around the edges due to motion sickness; Gray was like constantly freezing and melting ice, with "cold," "shaping," and "calmness" at its core, but always accompanied by the occasionally flashing "discordant" label due to his stripping habit; Erza's light cluster was the most stable and brilliant, like a prism refracting "Power," "protection," and "versatility" (costume changes) with almost no negative conceptual impurities; Lucy's light cluster appeared soft and complex, with "Astral Spirits," "connection," and "hope" at its core, tightly interwoven with the "contract," "doorway," and "starlight" concepts flowing from the keys on her waist...
He also "saw" Wakaba's "paralysis" and "leisureliness" permeating his smoke, Marcus's faint "Plant" and "growth," and Miss Mirajane's gentle glow hiding a nearly imperceptible afterimage of "Demon"... Each member was a unique "Information Aggregate," composed of multiple concepts. Every move they made was accompanied by the flow of concepts related to their magic power attributes.
Natsu and Gray's customary brawl at the entrance was, in his eyes, the process of "explosion" of Flame and "crystallization" of Ice concepts fiercely colliding and mutually canceling out, full of the dynamic beauty of Power. This pure observation, devoid of any utilitarian purpose, gave him an unprecedented, god-like perspective. He no longer thought about how to use these concepts, but simply "watched," as if appreciating a flowing abstract painting drawn by the rules themselves.
He saw more subtle details. When Levy, Jett, and Romeo gathered to discuss something, he could "read" the solid concepts of "friendship," "cooperation," and "knowledge" connecting the three, like three interwoven, mutually enhancing ribbons of light. When Elfman patted his chest and shouted "Man," he could sense the brief surge of "Power," "reception," and "determination" in his light cluster, along with a hint of imperceptible, potential fear of "weakness."
When Freed sat alone in a corner, expressionlessly polishing his sword, the edge of that stern light cluster seemed to be entwined with a trace of "loneliness" and "protection." He could even vaguely capture the collective concept of the entire Guild permeating the air—"unity," "noise," "guardianship," "unyielding." These concepts were not ethereal; they were like invisible force fields, influencing every member within them, and also constituting Fairy Tail's unique "atmosphere."
It was a peculiar experience. Having lost the ability to change the world, he seemed to have gained the "True Eye" that could perceive the world's essence. The clamor was no longer noise, but a symphony played by countless rule-based notes.
He stood at the street corner for a long time until a dull ache spread through his legs, then he slowly turned, preparing to leave. Just then, a somewhat timid figure ran out of the Guild; it was Lucy. She held a paper bag in her hand, her face etched with worry, and looked around.
She quickly spotted Roy, who was preparing to leave. "Roy-kun!" she called, running over and handing him the paper bag, a gentle smile on her face.
"Miss Mirajane just baked this apple pie. She said you need to regain your strength, so she asked me to bring it out to you." The paper bag emitted the concepts of "warmth," "sweetness," and "crispness," mixed with the "goodwill" and "concern" label from Lucy.
Roy was slightly stunned. He took the paper bag and said in a low voice, "Thank you... Lucy-san, and thank you too, Miss Mirajane."
"You're welcome." Lucy looked at him, her eyes still showing concern, but she tried to keep her voice cheerful. "Are you feeling any better?
Do you want to come inside and sit for a while? Everyone is actually quite worried about you..." Roy shook his head, avoiding her gaze.
"No need, I... I want to walk by myself." He paused and added, "It's...
a bit noisy here." Lucy paused for a moment, then understood what he meant. The magic power fluctuations inside the Guild might indeed be a burden for him in his current state.
She nodded, her tone even softer. "Then... please rest well.
If you need anything, just let us know anytime." Watching Lucy's retreating back as she returned to the Guild, Roy looked down at the warm paper bag in his hand. The concepts of "sweetness" and "warmth" were so real, yet they failed to stir any ripple of ability usage in his heart.
He raised his head and gazed at the azure sky of Magnolia, at the invisible but omnipresent flow of magic power, at those walking, "information life forms" composed of various concepts. The world had never been so clear. And yet, never so...
distant. Holding the apple pie, he turned and blended back into the flow of people on the street. This time, his steps were no longer as heavy, and his gaze held less confusion and more of a pure, observer's calm.
Perhaps, on the ruins of Power, within this enforced "listening," he could find a new way to coexist with this world. A path... belonging to an observer.
