A new term had arrived. There were not many new students this year—roughly fifty or sixty in total. Professor McGonagall led the first-years into a small classroom beside the Great Hall to wait for the entrance procession, while Alistair and the others sat at the Gryffindor long table, waiting for the Headmaster's opening remarks. "...And now, welcome our new students!" As soon as Headmaster Dumbledore finished speaking, the students throughout the Great Hall burst into applause. Professor McGonagall led the students in through a side door. "Come along, children. Now, when your name is called, step forward and sit upon the stool to place the Sorting Hat upon your head." Holding a roll of parchment, Professor McGonagall began reading off the students' names.
