After knocking the old woman down, the Black and White Fiends did not stop their pace, but instinctively turned their heads to look back at her.
Then, both of them sneered in unanimous contempt, as if mocking the old woman for being so utterly useless.
Seeing this, Wuming was instantly filled with anger. He never expected the Black and White Fiends to be so heartless; instead of offering help after knocking someone down, they actually ridiculed the distressed old woman.
Wuming loathed the Black and White Fiends from the bottom of his heart for harming such an innocent old woman in broad daylight.
Seeing this, Wuming forgot all about chasing the Black and White Fiends and quickly came to a halt.
He felt that saving the person was of the utmost importance right now, otherwise his conscience would never let him rest.
Without a second thought, Wuming quickly flashed forward and pulled the old woman up from the ditch.
The old woman was trembling all over with fright, and her clothes were soaked entirely.
With no other choice, Wuming had to help brush the mud and water off her.
Seeing that the young man before her was so warm-hearted and had promptly stepped forward to rescue an old woman like her, she was endlessly grateful from the bottom of her heart.
With Wuming's timely help, the old woman finally felt much warmer, and her spirits, at least, underwent a drastic change.
As she cleaned the mud off herself, the old woman said, "Thank you, kind young man, for stepping forward without hesitation to rescue a useless old woman like me. Otherwise, I would have drowned in this deep ditch."
Wuming hurriedly comforted her, "Please don't say that, madam. Aside from those two heartless villains, I believe there are still far more good people in this world. Anyone who saw such a thing would have stepped in to help."
"Oh, young man, what you said is so true! I hate those two inhuman beasts from the bottom of my heart. I can tell that they were trying to drive me, an old woman, to my death. Even if I turn into a ghost, I won't let them off!"
The more the old woman spoke, the angrier she grew. She was practically pale with rage, yet she kept on cursing relentlessly.
Things had already reached this point, and continued cursing would do no good, so Wuming hastily comforted her, "Madam, you should calm down. After all, those people are long gone without a trace."
"Even if those two deserved-a-thousand-deaths run all the way to the netherworld, I will still curse them, just to see if they dare bully an old woman like me again!" The old woman continued her endless stream of curses.
Despite this, Wuming patiently consoled her, "Madam, I advise you to save your breath and stop cursing. Since your clothes are thoroughly soaked, you must hurry home right now to change."
Hearing Wuming's comfort, the old woman's anger seemed to subside quite a bit. Looking around and seeing that the Black and White Fiends were indeed nowhere to be found, she had no choice but to stop shouting curses.
After all this commotion, Wuming had undoubtedly wasted precious time in his pursuit of the Black and White Fiends.
Wuming felt that this matter was no child's play; if he returned too late, his master's life would be in danger.
Even so, Wuming still needed to handle the immediate situation properly. He could not just let this distressed old woman freeze to death here, or else his kind intentions would be wasted entirely.
Just as Wuming was hesitating, the old woman asked, "Young man, where are you rushing off to?"
"Ah, replying to you, madam, I am on my way to chase those two villains," Wuming answered truthfully.
"Why are you going after them? Surely it's not because of an old woman like me!" the old woman asked suspiciously.
"Well, not entirely. Actually, those two villains are heading to Rhino Mountain to commit murder. I cannot stand idly by upon hearing this news, and I must rush there to stop them."
"So that's how it is. I can tell you're a young man with a good conscience. I'm truly sorry that you wasted such precious time because of a useless old woman like me," the old woman said apologetically.
"Please don't say that, madam. I merely happened to run into this. Would you like me to escort you home?" Wuming asked absentmindedly.
"Ah, there's no need for that! You should hurry up and chase those damned villains instead!" the old woman said through gritted teeth.
"In that case, this junior will take his leave." Seeing that the old woman was not losing her mind, Wuming bowed respectfully and said.
"Right, this old woman still has a favor to ask of you, young man. Once you catch up with those villains, teach them a good lesson for me. Even killing them would not be going too far."
"Rest assured, madam! I will punish the villains doubly to vent your anger and see if they dare harm people everywhere again. Madam, I'll take my leave now."
Just as Wuming was about to leave, the old woman called him to a stop again.
"Young man, please stay."
Hearing this, Wuming turned around immediately and asked with a pleasant expression, "Madam, is there anything else you wish to instruct me?"
"Ah, I have no particular instructions, but this old body has an item to give you."
Hearing that the old woman wanted to give him something, Wuming was quite surprised. They had merely met by chance—why would she want to give him an item?
True to her word, the old woman took an item out of her waist pouch and placed it very cautiously into Wuming's hands, saying, "This humble little token is not much, just think of it as a memento."
Wuming took the item and looked at it, only to realize it was a tiny Little Jade Rabbit.
Indeed, this Little Jade Rabbit was lifelike, crystal clear, exquisite, and dainty—truly a rare and lovely trinket.
Wuming held it in the palm of his hand to admire it carefully before raising his head to say, "Madam, this item is too precious for me to accept. You should keep it and enjoy it yourself!"
Seeing that the young man was reluctant to accept it, the old woman explained, "Young man, leaving aside the fact that you saved me, you happen to need such a jade rabbit right now, because it will bring you good luck."
How could Wuming believe such nonsense from the old woman? Even so, he did not want to let down her kind intentions, so he smiled and said, "Thank you for treating me so well. I will accept it respectfully since you insist."
"That's right. If you ever encounter any difficult troubles, you can talk to it about them. Who knows, it might bless you and keep you safe and sound."
Hearing the old woman say this, Wuming involuntarily lowered his head to look at the Little Jade Rabbit once more, and a truly sweet feeling welled up in his heart.
When he raised his head to thank the old woman again, however, her figure was nowhere to be seen. What on earth was going on here?
Feeling very strange, Wuming immediately searched all around, but the result was still nothing.
