Some ministers, forced to hold their bladders, had lips tinged with purple and legs trembling uncontrollably. Their only hope was for the audience to end quickly; they feared that if they had to stand a moment longer, their fragile lives might well come to an end. They were accustomed to a life of luxury—traveling by sedan chair and resting on soft couches during administrative duties—and were entirely unequipped for such torture.
