A month had passed, and the Cloud Recesses had long since been festively decorated, surpassing even the ceremony for the Chief Cultivator. The Burial Mounds, too, had been renovated by Hua Cheng’s men; though still tinged with a gloomy, ghostly aura, the paths leading up the mountain were hung entirely with red lanterns, and several new dwellings had been built, creating a rather pleasant scene. Hua Cheng had even taken the trouble to bring Wen Qing, Granny, and the others to stay at the Burial Mounds, solely to bring joy to Wei Wuxian. Everyone in the Cloud Recesses beamed with smiles, and even the ghosts on the Burial Mounds wore cheerful grins. On the fifteenth day of the eighth month, the Mid-Autumn Festival—since the grand wedding of Chief Cultivator Lan Wangji and Wei Wuxian was set for the very next day—Lan Wangji and the others decided to have the cultivation sects arrive at the Cloud Recesses a day early so everyone could celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival together. Lan Wangji had also invited Hua Cheng, Xie Lian, and He Xuan, the Black Water Submerging the Boats. At the start of the Mao hour, Lan Wangji opened his eyes. Wei Wuxian was still fast asleep, resting his head heavily against Lan Wangji’s chest as if having some wonderful dream, a broad smile plastered across his face. Not wishing to disturb him, Lan Wangji sent a brief message to Lan Sizhui before closing his eyes once more.
