Zhao Hong and the original owner were classmates from elementary through high school, and they even shared a desk in junior high. Before the deaths of her parents, the original owner and Zhao Hong had been best friends, as inseparable as two people could be.
Zhao Hong’s parents were ordinary workers, but with many children to feed and a grandmother in poor health who required constant medication, money was tight. Zhao’s father was a devoted son, handing over his entire paycheck to his mother.
The grandmother and both parents were biased: the grandmother favored her two grandsons, the mother favored her youngest daughter and youngest son, and the father favored his eldest daughter and youngest son. As the third child, Zhao Hong was neither loved by her father nor doted on by her mother; she was often mistreated at home and frequently went hungry.
