In 1977, the college entrance examination was reinstated. Yuanchun did not take it, but all the educated youths in the Educated Youth Courtyard did. Only three of them—Xiang Qing, Chang Qingyang, and Hong Xiurong—were admitted to universities, while Ma Guoliang was admitted to a junior college.
Over the next few years, a few more of the remaining educated youths managed to pass the exams one after another, while others were transferred back to the city by their families.
By 1980, all the educated youths had returned to the city.
