Ling Changfeng and Marshal Ling, father and son, had long found the members of the Government Faction insufferable. They were timid and cowardly; threatened by the Japanese, they dared not utter a word. They would rather act as lackeys for the Japanese, pointing their blades at their own countrymen, than point them at the invaders. Marshal Ling was a Grand Marshal forged in the fires of war, a man who spoke with the authority of his rifle—a patriotic, righteous gentleman. Seeing a group of Japanese men throwing their weight around on Chinese soil, wantonly slaughtering the local populace, had long disgusted him. Therefore, when the urgent orders from the Government Faction arrived, Marshal Ling pretended never to have received them and took his son home to sleep. They were the military of China; their rifles would only be turned outward against the Japanese. They would never be aimed at the Red Faction, who had risen up to protect the nation's soil and its people. Those, too, were their own countrymen.
