Chapter 49

Yuanchun’s land was leased to her Uncle to farm. Of the harvest, after meeting the grain tax requirements, her Uncle would keep one hundred catties as compensation for his labor, and the rest would be given to Yuanchun. This was the result of a discussion held among several of the elders. Initially, her Second Grandfather and her Uncle had both refused to accept the grain. They felt that helping Yuanchun farm was just a bit of effort and time, and they were too embarrassed to take a hundred catties of her grain or take advantage of a young girl. However, Yuanchun had insisted, and her Uncle eventually agreed. On the recommendation of the Old Village Chief, the two parties even signed an agreement. Yuanchun’s Second Uncle and his wife’s family had arrived full of high spirits, only to be chased away in disgrace. Because of this, the family not only harbored resentment toward Yuanchun but also toward the family of her Second Grandfather.
