The east room was occupied by Father Wang and Mother Wang, while Yuanchun, her daughter, and several of her nephews also lived there. It featured a large, six-meter-wide heated brick bed that slept a whole row of people at night. The west room also had a six-meter-wide bed, but a wall divided the space in two, serving as the rooms for the eldest and second brothers. The third and fourth brothers’ rooms were in an annex built later; inside, one would find a mud stove, with a small, three-meter-wide room on either side. Because the stove and the rooms were so close—with the doors located right next to the stove—smoke from cooking would drift directly into the living quarters, leaving the entire house perpetually charred and choking with soot.
