After intense deliberation among the four brothers, the family was finally divided. The second household chose not to take any of the house and refused to take on any debt; they simply took the few farm implements allotted to them, thirty catties of grain, and their own personal belongings. The other three households split the remaining grain equally according to their size, each receiving two rooms, some farm tools, and an equal share of the two hundred yuan debt. Following the split, Yuanchun moved with her parents into the village's former Educated Youth Courtyard. Ever since the last of the educated youth had returned to the city the previous year, the dozen or so rooms in the courtyard had sat empty. Yuanchun rented four of them from the brigade headquarters: one for her parents, one for herself, one to serve as a main room, and one as a kitchen. The day after the move, Yuanchun borrowed a handcart from the village secretary’s family and took her parents to the county seat. They bought an iron wok, a sickle, a large water vat, and a variety of daily necessities. They also picked up two catties of meat and fifty eggs.
