Zack stared for a long time at the glowing cottage in the distance.
He had wandered through the entire city, from the lavish and magnificent center to the filthy and chaotic slums. He had seen a noble young lady twirling and dancing gracefully, her gorgeous, expensive gown swaying in the wind. He had also seen a trembling, ragged boy sitting at a dark, damp street corner, wearing a look of blissful happiness as he ate a piece of moldy bread scavenged from who knows where.
Happiness seemed both distant and foreign to him. At the mere thought of the word, his hollow chest felt as though it had grown even more empty.
