After soothing Alice's emotions, the remaining task was to repair the dilapidated wooden cabin. The wall of my bedroom had been burned through to create a pitch-black, gaping hole, and the exterior of the house was scorched beyond recognition. Some of the wood had been burned to charcoal and crumbled into dust at the slightest touch. A layer of hard frost covered the glass and the interior of the house; it was frozen solid, and after hammering at it for ages, not a single chunk would budge. The frost outside would just have to wait for the sunlight to melt it slowly, while the ice inside had to be cleared away with a small shovel. It looked like I had a major engineering project on my hands—the whole house would probably need to be renovated...
