Chapter 6

Pushing open the heavy wooden door, the fragrance of jasmine drifting from the courtyard brought me a moment of instant calm.
Yet, the Queen’s venomous gaze remained burned into my mind.
"Don't be so impatient, Your Majesty," I muttered, a cold smirk tugging at the corner of my mouth.
This charade of being a body double had grown tiresome, and I, Su Mingyue, would no longer play the part of a damsel in distress. It was time to turn the tables.
I began to investigate this bizarre situation, quiet and unobtrusive. I would catch a slip of the tongue here, or ask a probing question there. It felt like piecing together a shattered vase—every shard was sharp, and each one could be misleading.
Fortunately, there was Lu Zhao. Beneath his icy exterior hid a surprisingly capable ally. He would leak key information to me, perhaps by raising an eyebrow or tucking a mysterious note into a book. He was truly a master of disguise!
When the truth finally came to light, I was struck as if by lightning. It turned out the woman I was impersonating and the Queen shared a history—a past riddled with hatred and betrayal. Let’s just say it wasn’t exactly a Hallmark movie. The Queen, in her twisted ingenuity, had decided that the best way to exact a warped revenge was to torture me, an unwitting body double.
Seriously? Talk about holding a grudge for a long time. The whole situation was a complete mess.
Then there was Xiao Jingming, who hovered around me like a persistent Shadow, always wearing a blank expression. I had assumed he was one of the Queen’s lackeys, but I was dead wrong. He was actually one of Lu Zhao’s men, tasked with keeping me safe. The revelation of this truth wasn’t some romantic encounter; it was more of an "Oh, wait, you’ve been watching me this whole time?!" moment. Still, having him on my side was a distinct advantage.
Three cobblers are better than one Zhuge Liang, especially when dealing with a royal pain in the neck like the Queen. We were a team now—a somewhat chaotic, slightly awkward team, but a team nonetheless.
Of course, the Queen’s wicked heart wouldn't let us off that easily. Word of my inquiries reached her ears, and she decided to escalate the drama. Suddenly, I was framed. Slandered. Planted evidence, charges of treason—the works. One minute I was enjoying a cup of jasmine tea; the next, I was staring at the inner walls of a dungeon cell. This wasn't the five-star treatment I was accustomed to, but hey, at least the rats inside were well-behaved.
The Queen, that cunning old fox, had played her cards well, and it looked like a winning hand. The Emperor, easily swayed by her crocodile tears and fabricated stories, had thrown me into the dungeon before you could say, "Off with her head!" It was a miscarriage of justice.
But—and this is a very important "but"—I wasn't going to let a power-hungry monarch and her trumped-up charges ruin my day. Lu Zhao worked his magic at court, pulling strings and calling in favors, while Xiao Jingming became my eyes and ears on the inside—truly. He even managed to slip into the prison, whispering words of comfort and sneaking me an occasional pastry. Let me tell you, in a crisis, the power of a good mooncake is not to be underestimated.
As for me? I kept busy making friends. A bit of acupuncture here, an herbal prescription there, and suddenly, I was the resident miracle doctor of the prison. The guards, initially suspicious, were now lining up for free consultations. One man in particular, whose cough I had cured, even started calling me "Doctor." It wasn't quite "Your Highness," but I could live with it.
The air was heavy with the scent of mold and despair, yet a glimmer of hope began to ignite within me. I felt a strange buzzing sensation, a familiar tingle in my fingertips. I reached into my sleeve and my fingers brushed against something smooth and cool. It was the pearl—the very thing that had dragged me into this mess in the first place. It pulsed slightly in my hand, radiating a strange warmth.
I stared at it, my heart pounding. "What are you up to?" I whispered, as a sudden surge of... something rose within me. Was it power? Or mere possibility? It was hard to tell. But one thing was certain: things were about to change. And this time, I felt like I was in control.
"It seems..." I murmured, turning the pearl over in my hand as its surface shimmered in the dim light, "you and I need to have a serious talk."
The pearl throbbed in my palm, warm as a freshly roasted sweet potato, contrasting sharply with the dungeon's chill. Did it have a new purpose? Speak up, pearl! Was this my "get out of jail free" card? My fingers tingled, and the dungeon walls seemed to sway... wait, was I hallucinating?
No, it was just the pearl doing its work. Suddenly, the musty odor faded, replaced by the scent of... plum blossoms? My vision blurred, and the cold stone floor beneath my feet vanished. For a split second, I saw colors swirling like a broken kaleidoscope.
Okay, maybe I was losing my mind. But it came and went in a flash. The pearl’s glow dimmed, and the dungeon returned to its former state. I blinked, the familiar grime of the cell coming back into view. What had just happened? Had I imagined it all? Unlikely. The lingering numbness in my fingertips and the faint scent of plum blossoms in the air were proof enough.
This pearl wasn't just a one-way ticket to the ancient world; it was a limited-access portal pass! It was time to test this treasure. I glanced at the guard sleeping nearby; his snoring was louder than a lawnmower. Perfect.
I gripped the pearl tightly, concentrating, imagining... anywhere but here.
"Alright, pearl," I whispered, a mischievous smile playing on my face, "let's see what you can do."
