The three rooms on the east side of the front courtyard were also arranged in a row. The two rooms on the southern end were each designated as living quarters for the servants, and each was independently equipped with an attached latrine and washroom. Although Lin Zede initially could not understand the purpose of this design, he eventually deferred to Lin Zezu. As it turned out, this saved a great deal of trouble. The remaining room on the northern end served as a storage room.
The main house in the front courtyard consisted of three spacious rooms. The central hall was furnished according to the customs of the dynasty: a central wall display, a long side table, an Eight Immortals table, and a pair of high-backed armchairs. On both sides, there were groupings of three-tiered tea tables paired with round-backed chairs. Because the space was wide and open, it was supported by three large floor-to-ceiling pillars on both the east and west sides. Sister Jiang had placed large potted plants beside these pillars, preventing the hall from appearing monotonous. The only things missing were the wall paintings and couplets, which required the personal touch of the head of the household, Lin Zezu.
