When Lin Zezu and Zhu Wenchang boarded the Zhu family carriage headed for Linjiang Village, another carriage, guided respectfully by Uncle Zhu, pulled into the Songshan Private School. Although this carriage appeared unremarkable and extremely plain, Uncle Zhu’s demeanor was one of profound deference. Few people in Linjiang County could command such respect from Uncle Zhu, let alone in Songshan Town. As the carriage came to a halt in the front courtyard, a young man of about fourteen or fifteen, dressed in green, stepped down. He was tall and slender with a face as smooth as jade, red lips, and white teeth—a truly elegant young gentleman. The youth bowed to Uncle Zhu. Despite the lack of fine silk garments, he could not conceal an air of nobility. He turned and helped an elderly man in a white Confucian robe descend from the carriage. The old man was over fifty, with a long, ink-black beard floating against his chest, a rosy complexion, and bright, spirited eyes.
