After lunch, some staff members began collecting leftover scraps and excess food, loading them into specialized transport trucks designed for hauling food waste. These trucks, giving off the aroma of fresh food, departed from the cafeteria and soon entered a tunnel. Driving all the way, they quickly arrived before a vast pit. The putrid stench of fermenting food permeated and diffused through this space, strong enough to induce immediate, intense nausea. Squeak, squeak, squeak—the cries of countless rats echoed through the space. In that pit lay what seemed to an endless mountain of food for the rats.
