After leaving the village, Zhang Zhi and Lin Wan'er continued onward through this mysterious world. They followed a winding path that led them deep into a secluded mountain forest.
Sunlight filtered through the gaps in the leaves, casting mottled patches of light and shadow. The surroundings were dead silent, save for the sound of their footsteps and the occasional chirp of a bird.
"Zhang Zhi, I have a strange feeling about this place," Lin Wan'er said, staying close behind Zhang Zhi with a slight tremor in her voice.
Zhang Zhi glanced back at her and offered reassurance: "Don't be afraid, I'm here." His gaze was steady; though he felt a touch of unease in his heart as well, he knew he had to be strong right now.
Zhang Zhi had a firm, resolute, and decisive personality, always capable of making quick decisions in difficult situations. Lin Wan'er, on the other hand, was gentle, meticulous, yet somewhat more timid.
As they walked, they came upon a mountain valley. The valley was shrouded in thick fog, making it impossible to see what lay inside.
"The fog is too thick. Should we take another route?" Lin Wan'er asked with concern.
Zhang Zhi pondered for a moment and said, "Taking a detour might waste a lot of time, and we might run into other dangers anyway. Let's go in and take a look, just be careful."
The two of them cautiously stepped into the valley. Within the mist, they could vaguely make out some strange, shifting shadows.
"What is that?" Lin Wan'er asked, startled as she grabbed Zhang Zhi's arm.
Zhang Zhi steadied himself and said, "Don't worry, it's probably just some illusions caused by the fog."
Just then, a fierce gust of wind suddenly blew up, scattering part of the mist. They saw an ancient temple standing ahead. The temple gates were tightly shut, surrounded by moss and vines.
Zhang Zhi stepped forward and gave the temple door a gentle push, but it didn't budge at all.
"It looks like this door is sealed by something," Zhang Zhi frowned.
Lin Wan'er carefully observed the surroundings and said, "Look, there's a mechanism beside the door."
Following her gaze, Zhang Zhi indeed spotted a concealed mechanism. He carefully fiddled with it, and with a creaking sound, the temple doors slowly swung open.
A stale, aged scent washed over them. They stepped inside the temple, where the light was dim, with only a few oil lamps emitting a faint glow.
Right in the center of the temple stood a massive divine statue. The statue's eyes seemed to be staring directly at them, sending a chill down their spines.
"This statue is terrifying," Lin Wan'er muttered, hiding behind Zhang Zhi.
Zhang Zhi examined the statue closely and suddenly noticed that it was holding a box in its hands.
*There might be something important inside that box,* Zhang Zhi thought to himself as he slowly walked toward the statue.
Just as he was about to reach the box, a low roar suddenly echoed through the temple.
"Oh no, danger!" Zhang Zhi pulled Lin Wan'er back.
At that moment, a massive beast lunged out from the darkness. Its entire body was covered in sharp spikes, and its eyes burned with a red light.
"What kind of monster is this?" Lin Wan'er asked, her face turning pale with fright.
Zhang Zhi gripped his sword tightly and said, "Don't be afraid, I'll handle it!"
Zhang Zhi engaged the beast in a fierce battle. Relying on his nimble footwork and indomitable will, he repeatedly dodged the beast's attacks while searching for its flaws.
The beast possessed a massive body like a small mountain, covered entirely in scales as hard as iron. Every scale shimmered with a cold, menacing light, as if trying to intimidate Zhang Zhi. Its bloodthirsty maw opened wide, spewing a plume of black miasma, and a pungent odor instantly filled the air. Its two huge eyes were like burning fireballs, revealing endless cruelty and fury.
Caught in this terrifying battlefield of barren, scorched earth where not a blade of grass grew, howling winds whipped up blinding clouds of dust. Though Zhang Zhi felt a trace of fear in his heart, it was overshadowed by his unyielding determination.
"Vile creature, today is your doomsday!" Zhang Zhi shouted angrily.
The beast let out a deafening roar, as if responding to Zhang Zhi's provocation. It lunged at Zhang Zhi with lightning speed.
Zhang Zhi flashed aside, executing the Phantom Step to instantly transform into an afterimage, dodging the beast's ferocious lunge.
"Hmph, is that all you've got?" Zhang Zhi taunted.
Enraged, the beast lashed out with blade-sharp claws, whipping up a fierce gale. Daring not to take it lightly, Zhang Zhi rapidly circulated the spiritual power within him and cast Vajra Shield. A layer of golden light enshrouded him, stubbornly blocking the beast's attack.
With a loud bang, the powerful impact knocked Zhang Zhi back a few steps, but his shield remained unbroken.
*What a formidable fellow!* Zhang Zhi thought in secret shock, though his gaze grew even steadier. *Still, I won't lose to you!*
Seeing its attack fail, the beast opened its mouth wide and spewed a stream of black flames. The heat was intense, scorching the ground wherever it passed. Zhang Zhi hurriedly executed the Breeze Formula, his figure fluttering like willow catkins in the wind to nimbly evade the fiery assault.
"Come on, you brute!" Zhang Zhi dodged while scanning for the beast's weak points.
Unable to land a hit after so long, the beast grew increasingly agitated. Its attacks became even more ferocious, but it gradually began to expose flaws. Seizing the opportunity, Zhang Zhi unleashed his ultimate technique, Heaven-Shattering Strike. The longsword in his hand erupted with a dazzling radiance, gathering all his strength as he thrust straight toward the beast's eyes.
Sensing the danger, the beast tried to dodge, but it was already too late.
With a squelch, the longsword pierced the beast's eye, and black blood gushed forth.
The beast let out a painful roar, thrashing its body wildly. Seizing the moment, Zhang Zhi pulled out his longsword and drove it into the beast's throat.
The fierce battle continued. Whether Zhang Zhi would ultimately defeat this powerful beast remained unknown...
Lin Wan'er watched anxiously from the sidelines, silently praying for Zhang Zhi in her heart.
After a grueling fight, Zhang Zhi finally found the beast's weak spot and thrust his sword into its fatal point. The beast collapsed to the ground, dissolving into a puff of smoke that vanished into thin air.
Zhang Zhi let out a breath of relief, walked up to the divine statue, and picked up the box.
"I wonder what's inside this," Zhang Zhi said, preparing to open it. But Lin Wan'er advised, "Be careful, what if there's danger?"
Zhang Zhi hesitated for a moment before ultimately deciding to open the box. The instant the box was opened, a beam of light shot out, illuminating the entire temple.
Inside the box lay a mysterious jade pendant carved with strange symbols.
"This jade pendant doesn't look ordinary," Zhang Zhi remarked.
Just then, the temple began to shake violently as cracks spiderwebbed across the walls.
"Not good, this place is collapsing, let's go!" Zhang Zhi grabbed Lin Wan'er and bolted toward the temple exit.
The moment they dashed out, the temple collapsed behind them with a deafening crash.
"What on earth is this jade pendant? Why did it cause such a huge commotion?" Lin Wan'er asked, panting heavily.
Looking at the jade pendant in his hand, Zhang Zhi said, "I don't know, but I have a feeling it might be a very important treasure. Perhaps this is the key clue for us in this world."
"What should we do next, then?" Lin Wan'er asked.
Gazing into the distance, Zhang Zhi replied, "I heard that deep within this continent, there is a sage who might be able to unlock the secret of the jade pendant. We'll go find him."
With that, the two of them embarked on their journey once again. What secrets were concealed within the jade pendant in their hands? Could that sage truly help them? All of this remained unknown, leaving behind a profound cliffhanger.
