Facing the steadily advancing mysterious person, Zhang Zhi and Lin Wan'er pressed their backs against each other, clinging close together as their hearts beat wildly, as if they were about to leap right out of their throats. Fear filled Lin Wan'er's eyes, and her voice trembled as she asked, "Zhang Zhi, they don't look easy to deal with. What should we do?" Her hands unconsciously clutched at the corners of her clothes, her delicate body shivered slightly, and her beautiful face looked somewhat pale from terror.
Zhang Zhi gripped his sword tightly, his gaze firm and resolute, as he comforted her, "Wan'er, don't be afraid, I'm here. Even if I have to risk my life, I will keep you safe." Standing tall and straight like an ancient pine tree, he exuded determination and courage. His knuckles turned white from the force of his grip on the sword, and fine beads of sweat broke out on his forehead.
The surrounding atmosphere was tense to the extreme, and even the wind seemed frightened into a standstill by the heavy mood. The woods were frighteningly quiet, save for the heavy footsteps and ragged breathing of the mysterious person. Sunlight filtered through the gaps in the leaves, casting patches of light, yet it failed to bring a shred of warmth to the tense situation.
"Hmph, don't waste your time on pointless resistance. Hand over the Mo obediently, and we might spare your lives," the leading mysterious person said coldly. His face was masked in black cloth, revealing only a pair of fierce eyes filled with greed and murderous intent. He was tall with bulging muscles, and he wielded a giant Battle Axe, its blade flashing with a chilling gleam as if it could cleave anything in two.
Zhang Zhi glared at them and shouted angrily, "We found this fair and square, why should we give it to you? If you want it, you'll have to step over my dead body first!" His voice echoed through the woods, brimming with defiance and rage.
The mysterious person let out a sneer. "Ignorant fools, then don't blame us for being merciless!" With that, he waved his Battle Axe, and his men swarmed forward like a pack of wolves.
The battle erupted instantly. Zhang Zhi did not back down an inch, meeting the enemies charging at the front head-on. Unfurling the Gale Sword Technique, his blade moved like a swift gale, fiercely rapid. Every swing stirred up a sharp surge of sword qi, and flashing sword shadows dazzled the eyes.
"Take this!" Zhang Zhi roared, thrusting his sword straight toward an enemy's chest. But that enemy was no pushover; dodging to the side, he swung his saber fiercely. With a sharp clang, blade and sword met, sending sparks flying.
"Kid, you've got some skills!" the enemy growled through clenched teeth, a ferocious grin twisting his face.
Zhang Zhi gave a cold snort. "You're still far from my level!" As he spoke, he spun around, thrusting his sword from a tricky angle.
Lin Wan'er watched anxiously from the sidelines. Although her martial prowess was not high, she was far from idle. Darting nimbly along the edge of the battlefield, she occasionally picked up stones and hurled them at the enemies to create opportunities for Zhang Zhi.
"Zhang Zhi, watch your right!" Lin Wan'er shouted a warning.
"Wan'er, look out for yourself too!" Zhang Zhi replied.
The battle was exceptionally fierce. Zhang Zhi had already sustained several wounds, fresh blood staining his clothes, but his fighting spirit remained undiminished. Just then, he noticed that the mysterious attackers' moves seemed to follow a certain pattern.
"Wan'er, I think their attacks follow a routine. Let's break through in a single direction together," Zhang Zhi shouted.
Lin Wan'er nodded in agreement. "Alright, I'll follow your lead."
Working together in seamless coordination, the two launched a fierce assault in one direction. Zhang Zhi's sword struck out like a flood dragon leaving the sea, an unstoppable force; meanwhile, Lin Wan'er used a small dagger on the side to disrupt the enemies. The mysterious person's defensive line finally developed a gap, and Zhang Zhi and Lin Wan'er seized the chance to break through.
They ran wildly, their flying footsteps kicking up billows of dust from the ground, until they finally rushed into a mountain valley. Mist shrouded the valley, making it gloomy and terrifying. Towering peaks scraped the sky all around, their precipitous cliffs draped in moss and thorns. Every now and then, the roars of unknown beasts echoed between the summits, making one's hair stand on end.
"Where is this?" Lin Wan'er asked, gasping for breath, her face covered in sweat and dirt, her hair disheveled.
Zhang Zhi looked around, his brow furrowed deeply. "I don't know, but let's hide first."
They found a secluded cave in the valley and hid inside. The cave was dark and damp, exuding a pungent odor. Water droplets dripped rhythmically down the cave walls, and the ground was thick with mud.
"Zhang Zhi, can we survive this ordeal?" Lin Wan'er asked, her eyes full of worry and her voice carrying a trace of a sob.
Zhang Zhi took her hand and said firmly, "We definitely can, as long as we don't give up." A hint of exhaustion showed in his eyes, but it was overshadowed by resolve.
However, just as they thought they were temporarily safe, the voices of the mysterious people echoed from outside the cave.
"They must be around here, search carefully!"
Zhang Zhi and Lin Wan'er felt their hearts leap into their throats once again, not daring to even breathe loudly.
At that moment, Zhang Zhi suddenly noticed a faint glow emanating from deep within the cave.
"What is that?" Lin Wan'er noticed it too, a flash of doubt crossing her eyes.
Zhang Zhi frowned and whispered, "I'm not sure, but it might be our lifeline."
Just as they were about to take a step toward that radiance, Zhang Zhi suddenly felt a violent vibration surge from the Mo gripped tightly in his hand.
This tremor was no ordinary shaking; it carried a powerful force, as if trying to break free from his grasp. Zhang Zhi was startled, his gaze instantly locking onto the Mo in his hand. He saw that the mysterious Mo was now emitting an eerie radiance. Faint at first, the light grew dazzlingly bright in the blink of an eye, banishing the surrounding darkness.
Amidst the brilliance, space began to warp, forming one dreamlike ripple after another. The scenery around them blurred, as if the boundary between reality and illusion had shattered. Zhang Zhi and Lin Wan'er widened their eyes in shock and disbelief. They tried to steady themselves, only to find their bodies being pulled by an invisible force, nearly losing their footing.
His companions were also thrown into a panic by this sudden turn of events; some shrieked in terror while others tried to flee, plunging the scene into complete chaos. Yet, after a brief moment of panic, Zhang Zhi forced himself to calm down. He knew well that panic would accomplish nothing here; he had to find a way to deal with this bizarre situation. Clenching the vibrating Mo tightly in his hand, he sought to uncover its secrets and find a way to regain control.
Within that distorted space, time itself seemed to lose its normal rhythm, and everything became elusive. Zhang Zhi's heart raced, large beads of sweat rolled down his forehead, and the violent vibration made his arm go numb, filling him with alarm.
"What is happening?" Lin Wan'er asked in a panic.
Zhang Zhi was equally bewildered by the sudden vibration. "I'm not sure either, but this Mo definitely has something unusual about it."
What on earth was that radiance? What did the vibration of the Mo signify? Would the mysterious person find them? A fresh string of suspense closed in around them once more, filling their future with uncertainty.
