Zhang Yue and Ziyan moved through the lair of the mysterious person as if walking on the edge of a knife, their hearts pounding as though they might leap right out of their throats. A chilling, bone-deep silence hung all around them, with only the sound of their own light, hurried breathing standing out sharply in the quiet space.
They stepped as lightly as feathers, terrified that even the slightest sound might trigger an unforeseeable disaster. Just as they were preparing to tiptoe away from the hall filled with classified secrets, a sudden, heavy burst of footsteps approached unannounced from afar. Zhang Yue's pupils contracted instantly; almost instinctively, he grabbed Ziyan by the arm, and like two startled rabbits, they quickly ducked behind a massive bookcase.
They pressed tightly against one another, their bodies trembling slightly from extreme tension. Peering through a narrow gap in the bookcase, Zhang Yue saw several figures in black robes march in with firm, orderly steps. One of them held a crystal ball radiating a dim blue light that looked particularly eerie in the dimly lit hall. He was muttering an incantation under his breath, seemingly casting some sort of detecting spell.
