On the west bank of the Nile, across an endless expanse of earth, lay the ancient city of Memphis, belonging to the ancient Egyptian kingdom. Situated deep within the heartland of the Cairo capital region, this area formed part of the Giza Plateau.
Giza lies just southwest of Cairo. The pyramid burial complex is located around Memphis, the capital of the Ancient Egyptian Kingdom, primarily upon the Giza Plateau. It includes three pyramids, a large statue known as the Great Sphinx, and numerous tombs.
The Great Sphinx, also known as the Sphinx, is the largest, oldest, and most mysterious of its kind in the world. Situated near the Giza Pyramids, it stands twenty meters high and fifty-seven meters long, or seventy-five meters in total length including its two forepaws. The Sphinx wears the nemes headdress, with fan-shaped headdress flaps hanging down beside its ears, the uraeus cobra relief carved upon its forehead, the pharaoh's symbol of royalty—a long, downward-hanging beard—on its chin, a collar around its neck, and falcon feather patterns adorning its leonine body.
