By the time dawn broke, Luo Jiang had already left the battlefield far behind, having traveled nearly a hundred li. Driving at night was slow going, and with the poor road conditions, the bumpy ride had made his backside ache. After putting away the truck, he walked into the woods beside the main road, intending to grab a bite to eat and cultivate for half a day before resuming his journey. Just as he ventured deeper into the woods, he spotted a few wild rabbits and pheasants. He picked up two pebbles, flicked them, and successfully brought down a rabbit and a pheasant. Finding a small stream, he gutted and cleaned them. He then mixed some mud with the stream water. Since this was the south, the broad, unnamed leaves here were much larger than those in the north, so he wrapped the pheasant in leaves and coated it with mud.
